What is the Harm of Smoking?

What Harm can Cigarettes Do?

You may know someone who smokes cigarettes, either a family member, friend, or co-worker. Cigarettes have several negative, life changing effects and we want to encourage smokers to quit the habit and begin leading a healthier lifestyle.

2004 Surgeon General’s Report: Four Major Conclusions
·         Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body, causing many diseases and reducing the health of smokers in general.
·         Quitting smoking has immediate as well as long-term benefits, reducing risks for diseases caused by smoking and improving health in general.
·         Smoking cigarettes with lower machine-measured yields of tar and nicotine provides no clear benefit to health.
·         The list of diseases caused by smoking has been expanded to include abdominal aortic aneurysm, acute myeloid leukemia, cataract, cervical cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer, pneumonia, periodontitis, and stomach cancer. These are in addition to diseases previously known to be caused by smoking, including bladder, esophageal, laryngeal, lung, oral, and throat cancers, chronic lung diseases, coronary heart and cardiovascular diseases, as well as reproductive effects and sudden infant death syndrome.

Easy Food Safety Tips

Easy Food Safety Tips

1. Time Control- Rule of 2: Food should go from stove to fridge in no more than 2 hours to prevent bacteria from growing.

2. Keep It Cool: Chill leftovers quickly, store in shallow containers and leave some room between dishes in the refrigerator so cold air can circulate.

3. Forget the Sniff Test: Even foods that look and smell fine can harbor harmful bacteria. Throw out foods that have been there longer than 3-4 days. You can also freeze leftovers for safe storage.

4. Reheat Thoroughly: Microwaves do not heat foods evenly, so stir halfway through. Be sure to heat all leftovers before eating.

Prevent Oral Cancer

Prevent Oral Cancer

The rate of smokeless tobacco users in the U.S. continues to increase. High school boys use smokeless tobacco at much higher rates, usually, than high school girls. With more smokeless tobacco products now available, it is important to consider the health risks.

Some health risks
·         Oral Cancer
·         Gum disease
·         Nicotine Addiction
Cigarettes vs. Smokeless Tobacco
-The only way to reduce an individual tobacco users health risks to the maximum extent possible is to quit using tobacco entirely with the help of treatments that have been scientifically documented to help people quit using tobacco (e.g., nicotine gum and patch, telephone-based behavioral counseling/quit-lines).
- Evidence shows that adolescent boys who use smokeless tobacco products have a higher risk of becoming cigarette smokers within four years.
